Amelia stared out the window of the hotel’s owner’s suite. Normally, she’d be looking at the caretaker’s cottage and dreaming about having her own space, but today, she was too preoccupied.

This was it. The last time she’d see Jordan while he was still in Candle Beach. Would it be the last time she’d ever see him? Her stomach churned and pain shot through her chest at the thought of never seeing him again. So far, they’d avoided talking about the future, but tonight was now or never for that discussion.

Someone knocked on the door, startling her from her thoughts. She ran her hands over the skirt of her sundress to smooth a few wrinkles, took a deep breath and opened the door.

“Hey.” She looked up at Jordan and their eyes met.

“Hey yourself.” He gave her a quick peck on the cheek, then eyed her dress. “You look gorgeous.”

“Thank you.” She smiled up at him. Her mood felt as floaty as the flowered skirt that swirled around her legs. She’d bought it back in San Francisco but had never found the right occasion to wear it before today. It seemed like the perfect thing to wear to the picnic she’d planned for the two of them.

He moved out of the way as she stepped into the hallway, closing and locking the door behind her. They’d already had a few guests try to enter their private quarters, thinking it was an access to the guest wing.

“Where are we going?” he asked. “You said you were planning something special.”

“I am.” She gave him a secretive smile. This was fun. “C’mon.” She grabbed his hand and they exited the building through the lobby, then walked around the side of the hotel until they reached the little cottage. “But first, I wanted to show you the progress on my cottage.”

“Ah-ha. So, this is the famous cottage you’ve been telling me about. I can’t believe it’s taken so long for you to take me here.”

She laughed as she unlocked the door. “I didn’t want to show it to you earlier because I was hoping the floors would be done by the time you left.” The door swung open and she pointed at the plywood subfloors. “Obviously, they’re not.”

“It’s a cute place. I can see the potential.” He walked across the living room and peered out the back window. “You’ve got a nice view from here.”

“I know.” Every time she was in the cottage, she loved it more and more. This was the place that she was going to make her own and would make Candle Beach feel like home. “Elvis already has the walls painted and all the plumbing and electric has been updated. So, once the hardwood floors arrive and are installed, I’ll be able to start decorating and moving in.”

“That’s exciting.” He went into the kitchen. “It’s like something out of a magazine.”

“Hey, I am an interior designer.” Her stomach clenched. Well, not really anymore.

She showed him the small bathroom and bedroom, then they went back out to the living room.
